Crystal River is the one place in the United States where you can legally get in the water with wild manatees. Every winter, hundreds of them crowd into the warm springs of Kings Bay, and a small fleet of local tour boats takes you out to float alongside them. Picking the right tour makes all the difference, so here are the operators worth booking, what to expect in the water and the rules you need to know.

The Short Answer

The best Crystal River manatee tours are Manatee Tour and Dive (my pick, from the Hunter Springs Kayak team), Fun 2 Dive (4.9 stars from 3,000+ reviews), Birds Underwater (guiding since 1989) and Waterfront Adventures (heated changing rooms and showers). Most tours run about 3 hours and cost roughly $60–$90 per person. Go between November and March, book an early morning departure, and remember the rule: look, don’t touch.

Danny’s Pick: Manatee Tour and Dive

Crystal River is where I had my first manatee swim right beside me, and it was magical. I’ve been out with the crew at Hunter Springs Kayak, and their manatee swims run under the Manatee Tour and Dive name. They know Kings Bay inside and out, and it’s the tour I’d book first. Adults are $90.40 per person including tax and fees, and kids 6 and under are $76.50.

The Best Manatee Swim Tours in Crystal River

1. Manatee Tour and Dive (Danny’s Pick)

Run by the same local team as Hunter Springs Kayak in downtown Crystal River, Manatee Tour and Dive offers manatee swim eco-tours on the Crystal River and Kings Bay during manatee season (November 15 through March 31). The rest of the year they run kayak trips, sunset cruises and summer scallop tours, so they are on the water every day. Manatee swims are $90.40 per adult including tax and fees, and $76.50 for children 6 and under, so there are no surprise fees at checkout.

2. Fun 2 Dive Manatee Tours

The most-reviewed manatee tour in town, with a 4.9-star rating from more than 3,000 reviews. The roughly 3-hour tour includes a wetsuit, mask and snorkel, an in-water guide who doubles as a photographer, and small groups capped at 12. It leaves from their shop at 135 NE 3rd St with free parking.

3. Waterfront Adventures (Kings Bay)

A small-group swim that leaves from the Paddletail Waterfront Lodge (525 NW 7th Ave) and holds a 5.0-star rating from 600+ reviews. The big perk on a chilly winter morning: heated changing rooms and showers when you get out of the water. Thick 5mm wetsuits, mask, snorkel and coffee or tea are included.

4. Manatee Adventures (Heated Boat)

The budget-friendly pick, from about $63 per person. It is a 3-hour tour on a heated boat with an in-water guide, and the photos and videos are included free. Hot cocoa after the swim and a treasure chest hunt for kids make it a good choice for families.

5. Birds Underwater

My very first manatee outing was a Birds Underwater boat charter. They have been guiding in Crystal River since 1989. Public tours start around $60 (about $65 in peak season) with gear, drinks and snacks included, and private charters for up to six people are a great option for families or groups.

Prefer to Paddle? Kayak Tours

Not ready to get in the water? A guided kayak tour lets you see manatees from above. I did the Hunter Springs Kayak guided eco-tour, and it’s the paddle I’d book: book the Hunter Springs Kayak eco-tour. It’s $95 per adult (12 and up) plus a $5 launch fee. Hunter Springs Kayak also rents kayaks and paddleboards if you’d rather explore on your own (see all Hunter Springs rentals and tours), and Get Up and Go Kayaking runs guided paddles in Crystal River too.

What to Expect on a Crystal River Manatee Tour

  • Early start: Most tours leave between 6 and 8 a.m. Early boats tend to find calmer water and fewer crowds.
  • Gear provided: Wetsuit, mask and snorkel are included. The spring water stays around 72°F, so the wetsuit keeps you comfortable.
  • Time in the water: Tours run about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, with roughly 30 to 90 minutes swimming depending on conditions.
  • No diving skills needed: You float on the surface with a noodle or flotation, so non-swimmers and kids can join most tours.
  • Bring: A towel, dry clothes and a warm layer for the boat ride back.

Manatee Rules: Look, Don’t Touch

Manatees are a protected species, and Kings Bay is a federal manatee refuge. Every reputable operator follows these rules, and you will be briefed before you get in:

  • Do not touch, chase, ride or dive on manatees.
  • Float quietly at the surface and let the manatees come to you (this is called passive observation).
  • Stay out of the roped-off sanctuary areas. From November 15 to March 31, seven warm-water sanctuaries are closed to swimmers and boats.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen or skip it and rely on your wetsuit.

Three Sisters Springs: The Famous Manatee Spot

Three Sisters Springs is the most famous manatee spot in Crystal River and, for me, the highlight of any manatee trip. Here is my video from Three Sisters:

Know before you go: from November 15 to March 31 the springs are a protected sanctuary, so tours swim with manatees in Kings Bay just outside rather than inside the springs. To see the springs themselves in winter, walk the boardwalk. Tickets are about $20 for adults, and a shuttle runs from the Three Sisters Springs Center (917 Three Sisters Springs Trail) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When Is the Best Time to Swim with Manatees in Crystal River?

Manatee season runs from November through March. When the Gulf cools down, manatees move into the springs, which stay around 72°F all year, so the coldest mornings usually bring the most manatees into Kings Bay. Book a refundable tour and watch the forecast: a cold front the night before is good news.
