Every January, a pirate ship sails into downtown Tampa, a few hundred thousand people in eye patches and tricorn hats line Bayshore Boulevard, and the whole city turns into one giant pirate party. That’s Gasparilla, Tampa’s signature tradition since 1904, and if you’re coming to Florida in winter, it’s the one weekend worth planning your trip around.

The Short Answer

Gasparilla 2027 is Saturday, January 30, 2027. Children’s Gasparilla is the Saturday before, January 23. On the main day, the pirate invasion lands at the Tampa Convention Center in the late morning, and the Parade of Pirates rolls about 4.5 miles from Bayshore Boulevard and Bay to Bay Boulevard into downtown in the afternoon (in 2026 it ran 2 to about 5:30 p.m.). The Sant’Yago Knight Parade in Ybor City usually follows about two weeks later.

💬 Danny’s Take
I went with a friend and it was an absolute blast. Think Mardi Gras, but for pirates. It’s a happy-go-lucky parade and a true Tampa tradition where everyone dresses up like a pirate and has a good ol’ time. One tip: if you’re taking an Uber, be ready for surge pricing pretty much all day and night.

Gasparilla 2027 Dates and Schedule

Children’s Gasparilla: Saturday, January 23, 2027

The family-friendly version comes first, with the same pirate floats and bead-throwing on a shorter route along Bayshore, and the whole event is alcohol-free. It draws around 100,000 people and is the best pick if you’re bringing young kids.

Gasparilla Pirate Fest: Saturday, January 30, 2027

This is the big one. The day starts with the pirate invasion: the José Gasparilla, a 137-foot pirate ship, sails into the Tampa Convention Center basin with a flotilla of boats behind it, and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla “captures” the city. Then the Parade of Pirates rolls about 4.5 miles from Bayshore Boulevard and Bay to Bay Boulevard into downtown, ending at Ashley and Cass Streets, with krewes on floats tossing beads to the crowd.

  • Invasion: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. (2026 times)
  • Parade of Pirates: 2 p.m.–about 5:30 p.m. (2026 times)
  • After the parade: the party keeps going downtown, especially around Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

Sant’Yago Knight Parade (Ybor City)

Gasparilla season wraps up with an illuminated night parade down 7th Avenue in Ybor City, usually about two weeks after the main parade. It was February 14 in 2026; watch for the 2027 date.

Is Gasparilla Really One of the Biggest Parades in the U.S.?

Yes. With crowds of roughly 300,000, Gasparilla is regularly described as one of the largest parades in the country, and local media often call it the third-largest in the U.S. There’s no official national ranking, but either way, it’s the biggest day of the year in Tampa.

The fun part? José Gaspar, the pirate it’s named after, almost certainly never existed. The legend came from an early 1900s promotional brochure. Tampa just decided it was too good a story not to celebrate, and more than a century later the city still gets “invaded” every January.

Tickets and Bleacher Seats

Watching from the curb is free; just get there early and bring a chair or blanket to claim your spot. If you want a guaranteed seat, 2027 reserved seating is on sale now at GasparillaTreasures.com:

  • Parade of Pirates bleachers: $50 per person early-bird (through December 31, 2026)
  • Parade of Pirates First-Mate seating: $80 per person
  • Children’s Gasparilla bleachers: $50 per person early-bird
  • Invasion Brunch at the Tampa Convention Center: from $175 per person

Getting There, Parking and Ubers

This is where most people get it wrong. Downtown and Bayshore are packed, roads close for hours, and getting home is the hardest part of the day.

  • Ubers and Lyfts: expect surge pricing most of the day and night, and long waits after the parade. Walking from a downtown hotel beats it every time.
  • Free streetcar and shuttle: in 2026 the TECO Line Streetcar ran free between Ybor City and downtown from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., plus a free HART shuttle bus from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Parking: downtown garages ran about $20–$30 for the day in 2026, with cheaper garages in Ybor. Arrive early, because they fill up fast.
💡 Pro Tip
Park (or stay) in Ybor City and ride the free streetcar downtown. You skip the worst of the traffic and the surge pricing, and you can head back to Ybor for food and drinks after the parade.

Rules to Know Before You Go

  • Drinking is only allowed in designated wet zones along the parade route and in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. You must be 21 with ID.
  • No coolers on the parade route (small soft-sided bags for kids or medical needs are the exception).
  • No glass containers, by city ordinance.
  • Children’s Gasparilla is alcohol-free.
  • Chairs and blankets are fine for staking out a curbside spot.

What to wear

Dress like a pirate. Seriously, half the fun is the costumes: bandanas, eye patches, striped shirts, tricorn hats and as many beads as you can collect. Late January in Tampa can be cool (2026 parade day only hit the 50s), so bring a layer and wear comfortable shoes.

Where to Stay for Gasparilla

Book early. Downtown hotels sell out for parade weekend, and staying within walking distance is the single best way to avoid traffic and surge pricing.

Tampa Marriott Water Street (top pick)

Formerly the Tampa Marriott Waterside, it sits on the water right next to the Tampa Convention Center, where the pirate ship lands for the invasion. You can watch the invasion, walk to the parade and walk back to your room without ever calling a ride.

The value play. Stay in Ybor City, ride the free streetcar downtown for the festivities, and come back to Ybor’s restaurants and bars afterward. Free breakfast helps fuel a long parade day. Check rates at the Hampton Inn Ybor.

Also in downtown: the Hilton Tampa Downtown, within walking distance of the festivities.
