Live mermaids, swimming in a natural spring, in a theater built right into the water. It sounds like something out of a dream, and it’s been one of Florida’s quirkiest roadside attractions since 1947. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is about an hour north of Tampa, and it’s one of my favorite spots on the Nature Coast.

I’ve spent time on the Weeki Wachee River, where I kayaked right alongside a manatee on miles of crystal-clear water. So here’s what to know about the mermaid show, what to expect and how to turn it into a full day.

The Short Answer

Yes, it’s worth it, especially for families and anyone who loves Old Florida. The mermaid show is included with park admission, shows run several times a day in an underwater theater, and you can pair it with the seasonal Buccaneer Bay water park, a river boat cruise or a kayak trip down the Weeki Wachee River. Go early, especially on summer weekends.

What the Weeki Wachee Mermaid Show Is Really Like

You sit in an underwater theater looking through big glass windows into the spring itself. The mermaids perform in the natural current, breathing through air hoses and swimming in water that stays in the low 70s year-round. Fish and turtles drift through the show like they own the place, because they do. It’s equal parts nostalgic, a little campy and genuinely impressive.

What People Love Most

  • It’s one of a kind. There’s nothing else like it in Florida, or really anywhere.
  • Old Florida charm. The show has been running since the 1940s, and it still feels like a piece of history.
  • Natural spring water. The clarity through the theater windows is stunning.
  • It’s a full-day park. Admission also gets you the river boat cruise, and Buccaneer Bay in season.

Honest Trade-Offs to Know Before You Go

  • Shows can fill up on busy summer weekends and holidays, so check the schedule and grab seats early.
  • The show is short. Plan the rest of your day around the park and river so the drive is worth it.
  • Buccaneer Bay is seasonal, generally open in the warmer months, so confirm dates before you go if the water park is a priority.
  • It gets hot and busy in summer. Morning visits are the most comfortable.

How to Plan a Better Visit

  • Arrive early. I say it about every Florida spring and beach, and it holds here too.
  • Check the show schedule on the park’s website the day before.
  • Add the river. Paddling the Weeki Wachee River is my favorite part of the area. You can book a guided clear kayak tour and, in winter, you may share the river with manatees.
  • Bring swim gear if Buccaneer Bay is open.
  • Make it a road trip. See my Weeki Wachee vacation guide for food and nearby stops.

Watch: what makes the Weeki Wachee River so special (it’s worth adding to your mermaid show day).

Is It Best for Kids or Adults?

Honestly, both. Young kids are mesmerized by real mermaids, and adults get a heavy dose of Florida nostalgia. Teens may roll their eyes for the first five minutes, then end up filming the whole thing. For families, combine the show with Buccaneer Bay in summer. For couples, pair it with a morning paddle on the river.

Danny’s Pick

Do the mermaid show and the river on the same day. Catch a morning show, then get out on the water. Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River, with miles of clear water and a manatee right next to me, is one of my favorite Florida experiences.

Is the Weeki Wachee Mermaid Show Worth It?

If you love quirky Florida history, have kids who love mermaids or want a different kind of spring day, absolutely. It’s not a theme park, and that’s the point. Keep exploring with my guides to the best springs in Florida, Florida spring kayaking and where families can see manatees.
