Every March, Florida becomes the spring break capital of the country. In 2026, Florida spots took 37 of the top 51 domestic spring break searches on Google, and Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa all landed in AAA’s top 10 booked destinations. But Florida spring break isn’t one thing. A family looking for calm water and a pool has completely different needs than a group of college friends, and picking the wrong beach can wreck the trip.
As a Tampa Bay local, here’s my honest guide to Florida spring break 2027: the best places for families, couples and quiet beach lovers, and college groups, plus the 2027 dates, the beach rules that catch people off guard, and where to stay in each spot.
Where Should You Go for Spring Break in Florida?
| If you want… | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Easy family beach week | Anna Maria Island | Calm Gulf water, free trolley, rentals everywhere |
| The whitest sand | Siesta Key | Powder-soft quartz sand |
| Upscale family + couples | 30A (Seaside, Rosemary Beach) | Walkable beach towns, bike paths, emerald water |
| Theme parks + beach | Orlando + Cocoa Beach | Parks, then an hour to the Atlantic |
| Quiet, grown-up beach | Naples or Pass-A-Grille | Sunsets, dining, no party scene |
| Nightlife + Old Florida | Key West | Walkable, nonstop bars, great for 21+ |
| Classic college spring break | Panama City Beach | Big beach, big crowds (with March rules) |
| Big city beach energy | Fort Lauderdale | Bars, boats and a beach strip, but strict rules |
When Is Spring Break 2027 in Florida?
Most colleges take spring break in early to mid-March, so the first three weeks of March 2027 are the busiest for college crowds. Florida’s public schools mostly break later in March. Here are the 2026–27 calendars for some of the biggest districts:
| School district | Spring break 2027 |
|---|---|
| Orange County (Orlando) | March 15 – 19 |
| Pinellas County (St. Pete/Clearwater) | March 13 – 21 |
| Hillsborough County (Tampa) | March 22 – 26 |
| Miami-Dade County | March 22 – 26 |
| Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) | March 22 – 26 |
Dates are from published 2026–27 district calendars; double-check with your district before booking. Easter falls on March 28, 2027, so the last week of March is busy everywhere, with families from Florida and out of state.
Can You Drink on the Beach in Florida During Spring Break?
It depends on the beach, and the rules have gotten stricter. Here’s where the most popular spring break beaches stand:
| Beach | Alcohol on the beach? |
|---|---|
| Panama City Beach | No, banned for all of March |
| Clearwater Beach | No, not allowed on public beaches |
| Daytona Beach (Volusia County) | No, alcohol and glass banned |
| Fort Lauderdale | No, alcohol, coolers and tents banned during spring break |
| St. Pete Beach | Only for guests of Gulf-front hotels, in their cabana areas |
| Siesta Key | Allowed, but no glass |
| Florida state park beaches | No |
Rules can change from year to year, so check the city’s website before you go.
What Are the Best Florida Spring Break Destinations for Families?
Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island is my pick for a family spring break on the Gulf. It has three distinct areas, plenty of places to eat, historic Bridge Street and a free trolley that runs the length of the island, so you can park the car for the week. The water is usually calm, the beaches are wide, and there’s more to do than just sit on the sand.
More: Anna Maria Island vs. Siesta Key.
Siesta Key
Siesta Key’s quartz sand is the softest, whitest sand I’ve found in Florida, and Siesta Beach is wide and shallow, which is great for little kids. Siesta Village has casual restaurants and ice cream within walking distance of the beach. Glass isn’t allowed on Sarasota County beaches.

St. Pete Beach
St. Pete Beach has more hotels right on the sand than Clearwater, without Clearwater’s spring break crowds. Upham Beach is my go-to, and Pass-A-Grille at the south end feels like Old Florida.

30A (Seaside, Rosemary Beach & Santa Rosa Beach)
The beach towns along Scenic Highway 30A in the Panhandle are made for families: bike paths, walkable town centers, emerald water and sugar-white sand. Seaside, the town where The Truman Show was filmed, has Airstream food trucks lined up around the town square.

Orlando + Cocoa Beach
Orlando is still the No. 1 family spring break pick, but expect big crowds at the parks during spring break weeks. My tip: build in a beach day. Cocoa Beach is about an hour from Orlando, versus about two hours to the Gulf, with bigger Atlantic waves and a fun surf-town vibe.

Crystal River (See Manatees)
Early spring break is your last chance of the season to see manatees in big numbers at Crystal River, and swimming with them is a bucket-list moment for kids. See our guide to Florida springs and where to see manatees.

Where Should Couples Go for a Quiet Florida Spring Break?
Naples
Naples is the grown-up’s spring break: calm Gulf water, the historic Naples Pier and great dinners on Fifth Avenue South. My favorite beach is Naples Beach at the pier, especially at sunset.
Pass-A-Grille
At the southern tip of St. Pete Beach, Pass-A-Grille has a small historic main street, sunset views and none of the high-rise feel of the rest of the coast. It’s the quiet escape hiding in plain sight in Tampa Bay.
Key West
Key West is technically a party town, but it’s a grown-up one. It’s very walkable, there’s a bar on every corner on Duval Street, and the sunsets at Mallory Square are a nightly event. It’s best for 21+ crowds and couples rather than families with young kids.

Where Do College Students Go for Spring Break in Florida?
Panama City Beach
Panama City Beach is the classic Florida college spring break, with miles of beach and a long strip of hotels and condos. It’s also a lot tighter than it used to be. Alcohol is banned on the beach for all of March, and in 2026 the city added a high-impact period with a curfew for unaccompanied minors, 21+ age limits on vacation rental bookings and extra police. Expect similar rules in 2027, and read the city’s spring break rules before you book.

Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is where Florida spring break started, and it’s still busy, but it’s a very different scene now. The city bans alcohol, coolers and tents on the beach during spring break and steps up police patrols. Go for the boats, the bars and the beach strip, not for a beach party.
Clearwater Beach
Clearwater Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the country, and during spring break it is packed. There’s no alcohol allowed on the public beach, parking is tough, and traffic on the causeway backs up. If you still want Clearwater, the city has run a free beach shuttle on spring weekends from downtown garages, so you can skip the parking hunt. Here’s what it looks like:
Daytona Beach
Daytona was once a spring break mecca, but don’t plan a party trip here. Alcohol and glass are banned on Volusia County beaches, and in 2026 the city declared an emergency and set a youth curfew after spring break crowds got out of hand. For families who want to drive on the beach or catch a race, see our Daytona hotels guide.
Florida Spring Break Tips From a Local
- Book now. Rentals near the beach for March fill months in advance, and prices climb as spring break gets closer.
- Look at the week after your kids’ break. Prices and crowds drop fast once Easter week ends.
- Get to the beach early. Parking lots at popular beaches can fill by mid-morning in March.
- Make it more than the beach. March is also spring training season and festival season. See our Florida spring training guide and best Florida events in March 2027.
- Dodge the crowds. See our tips on Florida beach crowds and when to avoid them.
